My Social Media Pledge
Source
Hard to believe its been five years since I first got my Facebook.
It was my seventeenth birthday, and I celebrated by going out to a fancy Mexican restaurant with my dear MacBoss sisters. It was a gorgeous summer night followed by a girly sleepover, giggling, and sweet memories. The next morning I had a birthday request to make of my parents: a Facebook. I reasoned with my dad that I was now seventeen, and Facebook would be a great way to keep up with friends leaving for college. He agreed, and I got on my dial-up internet to register.
I'm going to be twenty-two this weekend...HOLY COW! Again, I'll be celebrating with my sweet sisters while eating Mexican food and being silly till the wee hours. I haven't changed much, but my GOSH! How Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr have changed! Have you noticed?
Once meant to be a fun tool to keep in touch with friends, social media has turned into a weapon of ideology from every party you can imagine. I mean, the news media has even gotten involved and political rants appear daily on my feed!! I feel like I'm bombarded with anger from the left and the right, up and down and backwards...and I'm just trying to see how my roommates are doing this week.
Does this bother you? It drives me batty, and here's why: I do not exist on this earth to represent an ideological or political party. Yes, I am very patriotic, and I have my opinions and beliefs like everyone, but my job is not to persuade voters. I'm an ambassador of Jesus Christ, His Word, and His love. The end. My life, my words, and my actions must represent Jesus no matter how angry, or frustrated, or foolish I'm feeling. So that's why I'm making the following pledge.
The Social Media Pledge
I, Samantha Bossalini, do solemnly swear to abide by the following articles for a full year:
I. I will not post anything that is hurtful, derogatory, or sarcastic.
II. I will not engage in debates via social media.
III. I will not treat social media as my journal. When I am upset with someone, I will address them privately, and not leave obscure status updates, leaving the world to guess what the problem is.
IV. I will use my social media to encourage, build up, inform, and share.
V. My social media will be an accurate representation of the woman that I am, the women I intend to be, and the daughter of Christ that I will always be. If my media does not match my life, then something needs to be fixed.
On this day, August 3, 2012, I accept the purpose of these articles, and will abide by them to the best of my ability.
Signed,
Samantha J. Bossalini
