I heard the saddest thing a few months ago....
Peanut Butter is not popular in Europe, and is rather hard to find.
Ok, so maybe it isn't the saddest thing, but it's pretty stinkin' sad! If I lived in a country where there was no peanut butter, I think I'd cry...alot. Lots of people believe that the European spread Nutella is an appropriate substitute for the American peanut butter. I tend to disagree. Strongly.
Nutella tastes like melted chocolate chips to me (not that there's anything wrong with that, I just don't think its all that special). This girl was raised on natural peanut butter (never chunky, always creamy), and we go through at least two jars a week in our house.
For comfort food, protein, and healthy fats, I usually turn to natural nut butters. If you have an allergy to peanuts, any other nut butter will work in this shake. This milkshake is extrememly thick, and keeps you full for hours...did I mention it's also vegan?
Peanut Butter and Jelly Protein Milkshake
1 frozen banana (sometimes I put in two if I'm verrrry hungry)
1/3 cup strawberries frozen or thawed
1 tbs. natural peanut butter
1 cup non-dairy milk (I use unsweetened almond)
1 tbs. pure vanilla extract
1 scoop (or 3 tbs) unflavored soy protein powder (see note at bottom for more info)
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
a dash of nutmeg
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.
*note: You can honestly use any kind of protein powder you want. Chocolate would be good for a Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup milkshake, or vanilla would also work. I tend to use a vegan and soy-free powder called PlantFusion because I know its safe, and it has no flavor. It's basically a plant based protein that thickens up the shake.
