Getting Pretty

I looked like a lost Scottish person!

In my bright orange thermal shirt, blue and red flannel tartan shorts (that billowed to my knees), fur-lined slippers on my feet, and my hair pulled up into a ponytail, I looked like a very, VERY lost person. No, I didn't get dressed in the dark, and yes, I do have a mirror in my room. My closet is just a collection of hand-me-downs, bohemian free-trade skirts from India, and clothes I've kept since I was thirteen. When I'm not dressing like a misplaced Highlander, I wear black; LOADS of black. I've been told that I occasionally look like a Sicilian maiden who is in mourning. Great.

Of course, it doesn't help that I'm a complete pinch-penny who won't spend money on clothes, and happens to live in one of the coldest states in the union. But there is something about seeing yourself in tartan and orange that makes even the most fastidious, frozen Yankee pause in horror. This isn't vanity; this is a call for an intervention.

I need fashion help.

Perhaps it is the amount of Audrey Hepburn movies I've been watching, or my sudden uncharacteristic (and alarming) interest in fairytales princesses and the color pink. It could be my recent introduction to Macy's...never really been before, and its a revelation. It may even be the scarring sight of myself in tartan shorts so loose they could be a kilt, but I think its finally time for me to get dolled up.

I've always thought of myself as more of a ripped jeans and flip-flops kind of girl, but a quick look in my closet has informed me otherwise. I'm apparently more of a homeless kind of girl. Not ok. At twenty-two years old, it is time to get pretty. Its time to put myself together! I already wear makeup, so that's taken care of. I workout, so that's good. But fashion-wise? Oh mercy.

So, girls and guys...any tips? Help a Scottish-Sicilian-homeless girl out! I'll start by burning those shorts.

LOVE

  3. Its about fit not fashion. Clothes be tight enough to show ur a women, loose enough to show ur a lady. And in the words of stacey lonsons - two pops of color per outfit. To keep things matching i do nuetrals clothes and bright accessories. Oh, and take a friend shopping with u! And if u really wont wear it, dont buy it thinking u should wear it.

  4. Haha. Oh, Sami. I so wish I was closer to you and we could just go shopping together. :)

This may not necessarily be "your style," but about 85% of my wardrobe comes from New York & Company. They've got fantastic and really well made clothes that are both modest and fashionable. They aren't necessarily cheap, because they are good quality, but they have the most fantastic sales and if you hit it at the right time, you can get a tooooon of stuff for not a lot of money. So if there's one near you, I'd definitely check it out.
